Audi Model Range

The Audi car company was founded in 1909 by August Horch. Audi started to establish itself as a major car manufacturer in the mid-Sixties with the introduction of the new 60/70/75/80 and 90 models. In the 70's and 80's Audi introduced the world famous Quattro models. Today Audi is a premium brands producing models such as the A2, A3, A4, A6, A8, TT and the stunning R8.

Audi A1

The Audi A1 is a supermini-class car launched by Audi at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. It is available with four different engines including a 1.2, 1.4 (122ps), 1.4 (185ps) and a 1.6 diesel. All enginesinclude a start-stop fuel saving system and energy recuperation system. In the UK, A1 trim levels will comprise SE, Sport and S line. SE is the base specification, while Sport and S line models will also have sport seats, sports suspension and larger wheels.

Audi A2

The Audi A2 is a compact MPV styled five-door four- or five-seat hatchback designed supermini, produced from November 1999 to 2005. The A2 was notable for being constructed from aluminium. The A2 is built using considerable aluminium and aluminium alloy content which provides a significant weight advantage over similar sized cars resulting in excellent fuel consumption.

On unusual feature of the Audi A2 was the "Serviceklappe" or service hatch. This was a panel where the radiator grille would normally be and behind it are the filling caps for oil and screen wash fluid, and the dipstick. The bonnet was widely rumoured to be sealed but in reality it is easily removed, being held in place by two twist-lock catches. The around 8 kg heavy bonnet then comes away from the car altogether, unlike the usual hinged arrangement on most other cars

Audi A3

The Audi A3 is a small family car produced since 1996. Two generations of A3 exist, both based on the Volkswagen running gear , which they share with several other models such as the Audi TT, Volkswagen Golf, Caddy and Touran as well as SEAT León, SEAT Toledo and Škoda Octavia.

The original A3 was introduced in the Europe in 1996, marking Audi's return to the lower market segments since the demise of the Audi 50 and was based on Volkswagen running gear The car was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, in order to present a more sporty image than the Golf.

IAt the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, Audi launched the second-generation of the A3 designed by Walter de'Silva. It was originally launched only as a three-door hatchback with a redesigned and more spacious interior, new petrol engines with Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI), and standard six-speed manual gearboxes (except on the base 1.6).

Current models include the A3, A3 Sportback, A3 cabriolet, S3, S3 Sportback and RS 3 Sportback.

Audi A4

The Audi A4 is an executive car produced since late 1994. The A4 has has been built in four generations and is based on Volkswagen running gear. The first generation of the A4 succeeded the Audi 80.

The first-generation Audi A4 was put into production in late 1994. It was built on a Volkswagen platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat. It had a front-mounted longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive. Some variations of the A4 were also available with Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon/sedan but the Avant (estate/wagon) arrived a year later.

An all-new A4 appeared in late 2000 and the car's new styling was a great success, inspired by the Audi A6. The 1.6 litre base model engine remained unchanged, but most other petrol/gasoline engines received either capacity increases, or power upgrades. The 1.8 litre 20-valve Turbo was now available in two additional versions, with 150 PS (148 bhp) or 180 PS (178 bhp), this one with a standard six-speed manual gearbox, while the naturally aspirated 1.8 inline-four engine and 2.8 litre V6 were replaced by 2.0 litre, and all-aluminium alloy 3.0 litre units. The 1.9 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) engine was upgraded to 130 PS (128 bhp) and was now available with quattro permanent four-wheel drive, while the 2.5 V6 TDI high-end model was introduced with 180 PS (178 bhp). This generation of quattro consisted of default of 50:50 front to rear dynamic torque distribution. A Bosch ESP 5.7 Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) system, with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), brake assist, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) were standard across the range.

Audi introduced a revised A4 in late 2004 with heavily revised steering settings, suspension geometry, new engine ranges, navigation systems and chassis electronics (including a new advanced Bosch ESP 8.0 Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) system).

The engine lineup received many additions. The 2005 introduction of Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) on the 2.0 TFSI and 3.2 V6 FSI petrolengines, as well as other refinements, increased power output to 200 PS (197 bhp) and 255 PS (252 bhp), respectively. The 2.0 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine combined Pumpe Düse (Unit Injector) (PD) technology with 16 valves for the first time, while the larger 2.5 TDI V6 diesel was superseded by a 3.0 V6 TDI producing a 204 PS (201 bhp) model during the year 2005 which was upgraded to a 233 PS (230 bhp) model in 2006. A 2.7 V6 TDI engine was added later.

In addition to the higher-performance Audi S4, Audi reintroduced the high performance quattro developed Audi RS4 (RS for RennSport) to the lineup with a naturally aspirated, but high-revving 4.2 litre V8 FSI engine. Another notable inclusion on the RS4 was the latest generation Torsen T-3 quattro 4wd system, which used a 'default' asymmetric 40:60 front-rear dynamic torque distribution bias.

A limited edition variant, developed by quattro , was introduced in May 2005, named "Audi A4 DTM Edition". It was inspired by race cars of the 2004 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, and was reintroduced in 2006 as a regular option. The 2.0T FSI engine had revised software mapping to the ECU increasing the output to 220 PS (217 bhp).. It was available with front-wheel drive, or quattro four-wheel drive.

When the new A4 range was introduced, the old A4 series was not destined for extinction but was restyled and rebadged as the SEAT Exeo in 2008, with styling changes to the front and rear, also incorporating interior trim from the A4 Cabriolet.
